The Dr. White cherimoya, also known as “D. White” or “White cherimoya,” is a notable cultivar of Annona cherimola prized for its hardiness, flavor, and adaptability. and are fast-growing and can reach heights of 20 to 30 feet. They exhibit a consistent growth pattern, making them favorable for both home gardeners and commercial growers .
Dr. White is considered one of the most cold-hardy, performing well in USDA Hardiness Zones 9–11. It can tolerate minor frosts, making it suitable for regions like Southern California.
Dr. White cherimoyas are known for their sweet, tropical flavor reminiscent of mango and papaya, with some descriptions noting hints of pineapple and banana. The flesh is creamy and custard-like, earning the fruit the nickname “custard apple” .
The fruit is typically heart-shaped with smooth scales, measuring approximately 4–5 inches across. Its skin turns pale green or creamy yellow upon ripening . When properly pollinated, the fruit has a high flesh-to-seed ratio, offering a juicy and flavorful experience .
